Today we’re going to talk about Duplicate Content. So what is duplicate content?
Well before we get into it let me just tell you in my opinion it’s one of the most common mistakes people make when developing or maintaining a website.
Let me give you an example. Let’s say you have a website that sells some type of product, in this case Voltage Regulators.
You might ask yourself why voltage regulators? Well that’s because I happen to have a site that we are working on now that sells voltage regulators.
Anyway as you might imagine most voltage regulators are inherently the same. There might be some technical differences but over all, if you had to write a description about one you would probably notice that other than the specifications you may be tempted to use the same content for use on a similar product. This is often the case, especially when someone has several similar products on the same website.
Although not re-writing the same thing in different ways for every single product may save a lot of time and hassle, as far as Google is concerned this is a big no-no. The reason is that Google considers this duplicate content.
Although Google will not necessarily penalize you for duplicate content it certainly will not help your rankings in a positive way.
On the other hand having an abundance of relevant and unique content on your website is key to ranking well. This is because the more unique content you have on your website, the more valuable data Google has to serve up to its customer.
So you might ask who is Google’s customer? Well that’s anybody who’s searching for something on the web. The most important thing for Google is to return relevant results to the person who is using their search engine.
Another big mistake is to copy content from another website or web page to use on your own. Even if the website or webpage that you’re getting the content from is ranking well, it does not mean that your page will rank well.
This is because Google has an index of pages and knows who the original content provider was based on when that content was crawled.
So although it may be tempting to just copy content from one product to another or or save some time and snatch it from somebody else’s website, you will not be taking advantage of one of the most powerful tools in regard to raising your organic website ranking. Well written, unique and relevant content.
So in summary here are a few tips to avoid duplicate content:
- Don’t use the same content from product to product across your website.
- Don’t copy content from other people’s website.
- Take the time to write unique, rich and engaging content.
- If you don’t have the time to write quality content invest in someone who can.
